Eliminate Tooth Sensitivity with These Tips

Jun 28, 2017

Do you experience sharp pain in your teeth when eating, drinking or even brushing? You may suffer from tooth sensitivity, like one in eight Americans. Sensitivity in teeth is typically caused by worn tooth enamel or exposed roots, however, chips and cracks in teeth may also be a cause. Luckily, Dr. Cabrera Dental Associates in Houston can diagnose and treat tooth sensitivity.

Avoid Acidic Foods/Beverages

Certain foods and beverages such as oranges, pickles, soda and even coffee are quite acidic and can lead to enamel decay. When possible you should try to avoid these foods/drinks. If you eat acidic foods, wait 20 minutes and then brush. Brushing too soon after consuming acidic food or beverage can lead to further enamel erosion.

Change Brushing Habits

Certain patients actually increase tooth sensitivity by using hard toothbrushes and brushing too hard. You should use a toothbrush labeled as “soft” and always brush lightly, applying too much pressure while brushing can actually wear enamel away, increasing the sensitivity you experience.

Try Sensitive Toothpaste

The type of toothpaste you use can also have a big impact on tooth sensitivity, especially using ones that are supposed to “whiten”. If you experience sensitivity in your teeth, try changing to a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain potassium nitrate, which can help block pain in teeth.

Ask Dr. Cabrera Dental Associates About Tooth Sensitivity Treatments

At Dr. Cabrera Dental Associates, we want all of our patients to have a healthy, comfortable and beautiful smile. We offer various tooth sensitivity treatment options in the event at home care is not successful. These treatments include:

  • Fluoride treatment can be applied to sensitive areas to strengthen enamel. We may also recommend at home fluoride treatments.
  • If your tooth sensitivity is due to exposed roots, we can apply a bonding resin that helps prevent pain and further damage.
  • If you have receding gums associated with pain, a gum graft can help restore tissue in areas with a lack of gum tissue.
  • If your discomfort is due to a rotting tooth that other treatment options are not effective against, a root canal may be your only option. This treatment can completely stop the discomfort.
