Is Gum Contouring the Treatment for You?

Is Gum Contouring the Treatment for You?

A straight smile is definitely an attractive feature to have, and you may think that this only consists of straight, healthy teeth. However, a straight gum line also has a significant role in the appearance of your smile and, just as the teeth can be treated, can also benefit from a cosmetic dentistry treatment. A laser gum contouring procedure can be used to improve the appearance of the gums.

What does gum contouring treat?

When the gums are too high, low, or uneven, it can make the teeth (and lips) appear as if they are also too high or low and cause the smile to appear unbalanced. Gum contouring is used to change the edge of a gum line and reshape it to improve the aesthetics of a smile. It can be utilized to address the following problems:

  • A “gummy” smile: If gums cover too much of the teeth, the teeth can look unusually small and far away from the lips. Reducing the gum line helps to reveal more of the teeth and creates a fuller smile.
  • Uneven gums: Gum lines can recede over time, and if they recede at different places at different rates, they can be treated with gum contouring to restore uneven lines.
  • Dental restoration: Treatments such as dental crowns or porcelain veneers can be paired with gum contouring to create even more stunning results.

Benefits of Using Lasers

As well as providing an easier and more comfortable treatment, diode lasers have other benefits:

  • Greater accuracy
  • A more even gum line
  • Less discomfort and bleeding during the procedure
  • Quicker recovery time

Candidates for Gum Contouring

Gum contouring is a procedure that comes with little risk or few side effects, but because the effects are permanent, it’s important to have accurate expectations of the results. This is why a consultation is important before undergoing treatment so that you can see a visual representation of the projected results. Other dental or health problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease, will have to be resolved prior to treatment.
